Willmore
Wilderness Park
the crown jewel of Alberta
Willmore
Wilderness Park is one of the
Canadian Rocky Mountains best-kept secrets. This
mountainous playground lies directly north of Banff
and Jasper National Parks. The southern end of Willmore
has been actively used and enjoyed by hikers and trail
riders alike. In stark contrast, the northern end has
become increasingly inaccessible over the past years.
The trails High
Country Vacations travels are in the north end of
Willmore Wilderness Park. Willmore Park is directly
north of Jasper National Park. Its western boundary
follows the Great Continental Divide. An untouched
alpine frontier, the park is 4597-sq. km. of pristine
wilderness. It's one of the last virgin expanses of
this planet earth. The wildlife
and wildflowers are incredible.
There
are signs of life deep within Willmore that show that
the area was once a major transportation route. There
are deep worn trails, but they are covered in a twisted
mass of fallen trees. We have found old camps, fleshing
beams of trappers who have long gone, old blaze mark,
even tipi pole cutting. There are remnants of old cabin
and old cans from someone's meal buried by the fire
circles. Willmore was once home too many earth people.
When you ride the old packtrails, you can feel their
spirits, as if they were still there... somewhere.
Due
to the remoteness of the area we travel on an expedition,
our guests would rarely see other people - even on a
two-week trip! Excursions take you on trails rarely
traveled by anyone. Old packtrails wander through beautiful
and rugged country.
